Every year in Israel there are an average of 245 road accidents due to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to the data of the Green Green Association, about 407 people are injured in them, more than one victim every day on average.

Every year, an average of nine people are killed in accidents caused by drivers under the influence and 31 are seriously injured.

The best way to avoid such accidents is to leave the car, the scooter, the electric scooter and the bicycle at home and get to the entertainment sites by public transport, by taxi or with a friend or spouse who does not drink.

In the coming week, for example, Israel Railways will increase the route from Herzliya to Jerusalem, from where you can transfer to the red line of the light rail, which provides good coverage to entertainment centers in Tel Aviv.

This is how alcohol affects your driving / Green Light Association

According to Or Yerok data, 1 out of every 2 Israelis admitted to driving even after drinking.

Those who nevertheless prefer to take risks and drive can make use of breathalyzers: tests that allow you to determine whether you have exceeded the legal alcohol limit, and are not fit to drive.

Like the police breathalyzer, the breathalyzers are also based on analyzing the amount of alcohol in the air that is blown into their mouth.

While failing a police test will get you a two-year driver's license suspension and a fine, breathalyzers are not admissible in court and are less accurate, but should provide a relatively reliable indication of your blood alcohol level.

The police also use them as an initial screening line to identify drivers who are feared to be unfit, and those who are found drunk by them are transferred to an owl test.

Because these are simple and much cheaper devices than a breathalyzer, a breathalyzer may determine that you drank too much even when you are sober, but also vice versa, and the responsibility is on you.

How much is it allowed to drink?

According to the law, a driver will be considered to be driving under the influence of alcohol, if there are more than 50 milligrams of alcohol in his blood, or more than 290 micrograms of alcohol in the air he blows into the owl's mouth.

New and young drivers, like professional drivers, will think they are already drunk from an amount of 50 micrograms of exhaled air and in practice are not allowed to drink at all.

The aforementioned law does not specify quantities.

It is common to consider one serving of alcohol, a glass of wine or a third of a liter of beer as the upper limit.

However, in practice the rental threshold varies from man to woman, and also depends on your body weight.

Do not rely on feelings: the more you drink, the more alcohol will make you think you are fitter to drive.

It also lengthens your reaction time, which negatively affects stopping distance and hazard detection, and leads to poor estimation of speed and distance and reduced field of vision.

Disposable siphon/test & drive

One-time tests:

Test&Drive is a test that started to be marketed by GB Pharma, from the Globrands group, and shows results 2-4 minutes after exhalation.

The company prides itself on compliance with the TUV standard and the use approved by the TRANSCOM laboratory.

The test is sold in convenience and leisure stores, Pharm chains and pharmacies.

The cost of the kit, which includes two one-time tests, is NIS 20.

This is a relatively cheap price compared to market prices.

Also websites for wedding accessories that offer disposable puffs sell a single unit for about NIS 20, and the price drops to the NIS 10 area only when purchasing a quantity of over 1,000 units.

Reusable tests:

the market also offers reusable blowers, on batteries.

They are sold for NIS 75 to 200 per unit, and their advantage is that they can always be available, and that they provide results more quickly than the one-time, sometimes in less than 10 seconds.

Some will oblige you to later purchase additional disposable plastic mouthpieces beyond the ones provided with the device, or to allow other users to use your device as well.

However, it is not always clear what their lifespan is and when their test is accurate, when in any case they are also not recognized in court, and may be more likely to miss a driver who has drunk too much, or to warn a sober driver from driving.
