“Structural” or “cyclical”?
The debate is the same each time: are the reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions recorded in recent years in France a direct effect of “French ecology” promoted by the government or are they? the consequences of mild weather and too expensive energy?
The fact is that these emissions are decreasing, and the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu, did not hesitate to announce on Wednesday "a record year", anticipating by 24 hours the publication of the annual barometer from Citepa, the organization responsible for the emissions inventory.
In 2023, France will indeed record a decrease of 4.8% compared to 2022, or 19 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (Mt CO2e) less.
CO₂ equivalent is a measurement that takes into account carbon dioxide but also other greenhouse gases such as methane.
France emitted 385 Mt CO₂e, according to Citepa.
