What is "general artificial intelligence", the milestone that obsesses big technology companies

Highlights: "Strong AI" or "strong AI" is a system where machines learn to make their own logical decisions. The theory indicates that they will be able to surpass human beings in all facets of knowledge. These machines could develop their own feelings and have their own subjective experience. The great fear is that AGI will improve itself at an exponential rate until it reaches a point where its intelligence operates at a level unattainable by human understanding. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang surprised everyone by declaring that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could arrive in 5 years and that it will be “8 percent better” than that of humans.

IAG or "strong AI", which for many researchers is a myth, is a system where machines learn to make their own

logical decisions

.

The theory indicates that

they will be able to surpass human beings

in all facets of knowledge.

These machines could develop their own feelings and have their own

subjective experience

, a capacity that opens an ethical debate and that has been widely explored by science fiction cinema and literature.

At Nvidia's GTC conference, Huang set a timeline of just five years for companies to get closer to this possibility.

He also took the opportunity to clarify some expectations generated by this technological change.

For the manager, predicting the time in which a general AI will appear depends largely on what an acceptable AGI should be understood to be.

That is why he maintains that one must be specific about what an AGI means and what it is expected to do to assess whether it has achieved the goal.

When it comes to tests, a general AI could successfully pass law exams, logic tests, or the ability to solve university entrance exams.

"If you think of AGI as something very specific, a set of tests in which a software program can perform very well (or maybe 8% better than most people), we'll get there within five years," concludes Huang.

One of the problems with current models is how to solve AI hallucinations and the tendency of some chatbots to

invent answers

that sound credible, but are not based on facts.

For Huang this is simpler to solve than it seems.

The solution is to make sure the answers are well researched.

An "augmented recovery generation" would solve the problem, as the approach is similar to that of basic literacy: examining the source and the context.

Nvidia is a

leading company in graphics processing technology

, whose GPUs are fundamental in the development of AI because their boards allow

efficient processing of large data sets

in artificial intelligence applications.

One of the first to talk about AGI was

Mark Zuckerberg

, who seems pretty confident that his company will reach (sooner rather than later) this unprecedented technological milestone.

IAG: doubts and uncertainties

Not all AI experts are convinced of the arrival of general AI as presented in science fiction.

The fluidity with which a chatbot operates or its ability to solve tests through data confirmation and the use of language is not proof that it is a being with a mental structure similar to that of a human.

For this group of researchers, a scenario in which a general AI is achieved is not possible because, in principle, there is no consensus on what should be understood by that stage of AI.

This is a philosophical and not a scientific question, they say.
