These are the cars where the repair costs and frequency are the lowest/ShutterStock
After so many years and surveys, it seems that those who are knowledgeable in the field can already compile in advance the list of cars that will star in the reliability surveys that are published from time to time.
But in this case, there are a few things that caught the eye: most of the reliability surveys refer to relatively young cars.
Here we are talking about cars that are 7 to 10 years old, so we are talking about used cars, most of which cost around 20-50 thousand shekels in Israel.
The survey published in the UK was conducted by Warrantywise, a company that sells extended car warranty services, which are actually insurance against major breakdowns for years after the end of the manufacturer's warranty, as offered in Israel, for example, by Toyota.
The ranking was based on data from the years 2020-2023.
The final score given from 1 to 100 is a weighting of the number of repairs and their costs.
For example, it is possible that in the final grade two cars with different repair costs will be ranked together due to the low repair frequency of one of them.
And the results?
You can find listed most of the cars you expected to be there, alongside one from a brand we don't usually meet there that managed to make it to the ranking.
There is a very interesting reason for this, one that can be very useful when you are looking for a used car.
Toyota Yaris, the cheapest to maintain/Nir Ben Tovim, Kenan Cohen
According to the survey, with 89 points, the Toyota Yaris was the cheapest car to repair and had the lowest repair frequency.
When between the years 2020 and 2023 the average treatment for its warranty claims was 604 pounds, which is NIS 2,773. If the amount is startling at first, it is for the simple reason that it is not the cost of the treatments - but the cost of the repairs in the event that something goes abnormally wrong and requires a repair that is beyond reasonable wear and tear.
The Yaris is one of 4 models of the Japanese manufacturer that made it to the top ten in the results, along with the Auris, Aygo and Hilux. With the Auris in 3rd place, and 5th place shared by the last two. In addition to this quartet, there are three other Japanese models that entered the list; Suzuki Swift, Honda CR-V and Mazda 2. Two Koreans, Kia Cid and Kia Rio and a single European model of Peugeot - the 107.
This is the place to mention that the 107 is actually part of a joint venture in which PSA (Peugeot Citroen before the creation of Stellentis) and Toyota joined to create a triangle of models which were jointly developed. These were the Eigo on the Toyota side and the 107 on the Peugeot side and the C1 on the Citroën side. The Japanese were responsible for the engine and gearboxes and the French for the rest, including production.
