Starting tomorrow, the state will invest NIS 240 million a year in significant discounts for young people, residents of the periphery, and the expansion of free travel for people with disabilities. But the discounts are not automatic: what is the benefit?

The most significant discount, 50% for the residents of the periphery, will be given only for a monthly pass, not for a daily or single trip/official website, Avshalom Sashoni, Ma'ariv

A great many Israelis will be able to travel from tomorrow for free or at a great discount by bus, heavy and light rail and even the cable car in Haifa.

This is as part of the first stage in the transportation justice reform initiated by Miri Regev, and received the support of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

With a budget of NIS 240 million, the state will provide significant benefits to 2.8 million people according to the calculations of the Ministry of Transportation, if everyone leaves their private vehicles at home and takes advantage of them.

These are the benefits that the reform includes, and what you must do to receive them - they are not automatic.

What is the discount for residents of the periphery?

Dozens of localities ranked 1-5 in the geographic periphery, determined by their distance from the center of the country and major employment centers, will receive a 50% discount on the purchase of the various monthly free routes, regional, national, with or without train.

There will be no discount for a single trip and daily free, so the benefit is only intended for heavy users of public transportation.

This ranking currently excludes from the list large cities such as Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, and established peripheral settlements such as Kfar Varadim and Omar, but includes settlements such as Kiryat Shmona, Tiberias, Arad, Ofakim, Netivot, Rahat, Eilat and Beer Sheva.

This is a saving of NIS 49.5 for a free-regional pass in the periphery, which allows free travel within a radius of 40 km for a month, and up to a saving of NIS 305 on travel on all buses and trains in Israel for a month (except the lines to Eilat).

What is the discount for veterans?

Veterans and veterans National service will receive a 100% discount, meaning free travel, in the first year after their release, as they traveled for free while serving. This is a benefit that can be worth thousands of shekels to those who take full advantage of it.

What is the discount for young people aged 18-26?

From their 18th birthday until their 26th birthday, every young Israeli will enjoy a 33% discount on all types of monthly subscriptions, in order to make it easier for them financially in the years when they are not yet employed with high salaries, and to encourage them and get them used to using public transportation and not a private car.

What is the new benefit for people with disabilities and those entitled to social security?

Until today they were entitled to a 50% discount on individual trips.

It benefited those who traveled a little, but not those who use public transportation almost daily.

Now people with disabilities and those entitled to the National Insurance will also be able to get a 50% discount on the various monthly free routes.

What must be done to receive the new discounts?

It is mandatory to update your profile on Rav Ko or the payment apps on smartphones.

This can be done digitally, on the Rav Ko and Hop On websites or by physically coming to the Rav Ko centers.

In any case, you will need to show a photo of your ID and to receive a discount as a resident of the periphery with additional confirmation that you live in the locality in question: a property tax/electricity/water bill in your name or an attorney's affidavit. You can verify that your locality is included in the discount on the Tzedek Transportation website. There are localities such as Zichron Ya'akov, Binyamina and Kiryat Tivon where only residents of certain Rehovot will be able to receive the discount, also details on this on the website, or at the Ministry of Transportation hotline 4515*.

What is planned for the second phase of the reform?

The second phase that will be launched in the coming months will include the expansion of free travel for senior citizens (women from the age of 62 , men from the age of 67 instead of the current age of 75), and will include discounts based on socio-economic ranking in segmentation at the neighborhood level and not only of the whole settlement in the whole country, with the understanding that in many settlements there are significant gaps between the neighborhoods and the reform should address them. This way the residents will also receive the discount Weak neighborhoods in Tel Aviv - and in Bnei Brak.
