The Portuguese Grand Prix saw the triumph of two Spanish riders, Aron Canet in Moto2 and Daniel Holgado in Moto3, accompanied by the on-track performance of the Pirelli tires which accompanied the riders of both classes in achieving both new all-time track records and those of the race.
"At the end of our second Grand Prix - commented Giorgio Barbier, Pirelli motorcycle racing director - the balance is certainly positive and the performance of the tires was very good. In Moto2 the riders were very fast and Aldeguer improved the lap record of the race that dated back to 2020".
"Compared to Qatar - added Barbier - where there was more indecision about the compounds to use in the race, today all the riders opted for the soft SC0 on the rear, and this is a sign that they are starting to better understand the difference between the compounds and their behaviour. Even better than what we saw in Moto3 with an improvement of 18 seconds in race time compared to last year, therefore almost 1 second per lap, with Alonso improving the race record lap by over half a second ".
In Moto2 Fermín Aldeguer (Beta Tools SpeedUp/Boscoscuro) set the new race record lap of 1'42.221 on the eleventh lap, improving Remy Gardner's 2020 record by almost 3 tenths (1'42'504) and also the overall race time improved slightly compared to last year.
On the Moto3 grid we have seen various combinations regarding tire choice.
Of the three riders on the podium, the winner Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3/GASGAS) used the medium SC2 solution for both axles, Jose Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo/KTM), second, instead chose the soft SC1 both front and rear while Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets - MSI/KTM), third, opted for SC2 at the front and SC1 at the rear.
