New diesel varieties will be launched this year.
Starting in April, gas stations in Germany will be able to sell the XTL, HVO and B7 varieties.
But what is behind the abbreviations?
Anyone who drives a petrol engine is spoiled for choice at the petrol station: should it be the classic Super 95 or the cheaper alternative E10?
Or one of the premium fuels from the big chains?
When it comes to diesel, the choice isn't quite as big.
In addition to the premium product, there is usually only the B7 diesel and a variant for trucks. But that may change from spring 2024.

New diesel varieties from April: What do XTL, HVO and B10 stand for?
Starting in April, gas stations in Germany will be allowed to sell new types of diesel: HVO, XTL and B10.
These more environmentally friendly fuels are intended to help Germany become climate neutral by 2045.
The Federal Environment Ministry assumes that around five percent of the more than 14,5000 gas stations in Germany will offer the new varieties.
In addition to conventional diesel, gas stations will soon also be able to sell the XTL and B10 varieties.

At the pumps, drivers will recognize the new fuels by the names XTL (also includes HVO) and B10.
But what is behind these cryptic abbreviations?
XTL: This abbreviation stands for “X to Liquid”.
The X serves as a placeholder for the different starting materials.
These are converted into liquid energy sources.
According to the ADAC, biofuel can be produced from raw materials such as vegetable oil or waste products such as manure.
Like HVO, XTL is a paraffinic diesel.
HVO: The abbreviation stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils.
This diesel consists of vegetable oils whose properties have been adapted to fossil fuels.
B10: This fuel is basically the counterpart to Super E10.
This means: up to ten percent biodiesel is added.
Not all cars can tolerate biodiesel: these manufacturers have approved B10 and XL
However, bio-diesel has one disadvantage: not every model is suitable for use.
Only a few manufacturers have so far approved their vehicles for the use of B10, XTL and HVO.
