After just seven years, Audi is adjusting its model names again.
The performance-related double digits are deleted.
But that's not the only change.
Finding a name for a model is not easy.
What sounds good in one language can be a huge mess in another.
Audi has already made a few such faux pas.
In France, electric cars are called turds.
On top of that, the names of the models are sometimes confusing.
But that should change again in the future.
The reason for the unclear names is the nomenclature that Audi introduced in 2017.
Since then, the abbreviations TDI and TSI have been preceded by performance-related double digits.
Models with 109 to 128 hp now have a 30 in their name.
If there is a 70 in front of it, it means at least 536 hp.
This also applies to the electric cars with the four rings.
The double digit enables a uniform naming because, unlike combustion engines, electric cars do not have a displacement.

Double digits for performance are no longer necessary: the Q8 e-tron and Q6 e-tron no longer have numerical codes
While BMW and Mercedes have long used numbers as an indication of performance, the change was apparently less well received by Audi customers.
After seven years, the people of Ingolstadt are changing again, as
Auto, Motor und Sport (AMuS)
writes.
Audi has already dispensed with the double digits in the Q8 e-tron and Q6 e-tron.

The Q8 E-Tron already came without the additional name and the Q6 E-Tron also did without it.
They want to make it easier for customers, said head of sales and product marketing, Florian Hauser, to the British
Auto Express
.
Consequently, the double digits will gradually no longer be found on the rear of the combustion engines.
But they still have an expiry date in Ingolstadt.
Audi continues to focus entirely on electric cars.
However, the numerical codes can still appear in the brochure and configurator.

Audi is revising nomenclature: electric cars will have straight numbers in the future
One explanation for the change could be the ever-shrinking range of engines,

speculates .
There are also enough additions to the names with Quattro for the all-wheel drive models and RS or S for particularly sporty Audis.

Customers have to get used to it anyway.
Because Audi is also saying goodbye to the current naming system.
For example, until now the A5 was a coupe version of the A4.
It was similar with the A6 and A7.
In the future, the odd numbers will be assigned to combustion engine models.
That means the A4 will become the A5.
The electric cars then have numbers on them.
But Audi is in good company here, as BMW is also changing its name with the New Class.
