The Mazda CX-60 is not just a premium SUV, but the technological manifesto of what the Japanese brand is today, thanks to the many solutions that underline its unique character, and the desire to emerge by focusing on quality and innovation . We tried it in the e-Skyactiv D Homura RWD variant, i.e. with "only" rear-wheel drive. Yes, because the CX-60 was born on a platform that involves the adoption of the engine mounted in a longitudinal position with rear-wheel drive, which, on other variants, can also be all-wheel drive. A noble architecture, used by high-sounding brands for high-end cars, and which Mazda has reinterpreted in its own way, using various solutions aimed at maximizing its efficiency and enhancing its dynamics. First of all, however, you recognize a Mazda by its style, by the evolution of the Kodo design, which focuses on apparently simple surfaces in proportions, only to discover complex plays of light aimed at making them original, but always balanced overall. In its Sonic Silver livery with black wheels and details of the same color on the bodywork, which replace the chrome, it has a sporty accent that doesn't hurt, while remaining an imposing car, as underlined by the combined length of 4.74 meters at a significant height and width. The layout of the mechanics also influences the volumes, with the long bonnet that stands out and tends to move the passenger compartment area slightly further back. Even the limited front overhang, which contrasts with the more important rear one, represents its peculiarity.

The interior, generous with space, in this version is characterized by the black leather of the upholstery with contrasting stitching, and by the surface of the dashboard of the same colour, but interspersed with silver elements. Simple in graphics, but exhaustive in the information available, the digital instrumentation is always alert to draw the driver's attention should he divert his gaze from the road. To keep him focused on driving, the CX-60 uses a very large head-up display, and to allow him to travel in ideal conditions, it performs a sort of magic, recognizing him through a camera, and reporting the settings of the seat, steering wheel and rear-view mirrors. , and head-up display, in the previously stored parameters.

Obviously, there is a large 12.3-inch screen to manage the infotainment system in synergy with the practical central rotor. The graphics are elegant and intuitive and, thanks to compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the connection with the smartphone occurs simply and immediately. On the sample under test, equipped with the Convenience & Sound Pack, there is also an induction charging surface, and a Bose audio system with 12 speakers, for superior sound. Also offered with the same package is the rear tailgate with handsfree opening, for easy access to the 570-litre load compartment with 5 people on board. Once underway, the Mazda CX-60 surprises despite its size, because it is agile when entering corners, stable, and communicative, thanks to its rear-wheel drive architecture, double wishbone front end, and multi-link rear suspension. Under the bonnet, the 3.3 turbodiesel 6-cylinder in-line engine with 48 Volt hybrid system runs slyly, which stands out for its cutting-edge technology. In fact, the shape of the piston crown, called Double Egg-Shape, allows it to optimize combustion through the system called Distribution Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition, for a thermal efficiency of over 40%. All this translates into brilliant performance and low fuel consumption, which, with a careful foot, allow averages above 20 km/l. In any case, even when driving without thinking about the mileage, 16 km/l are always guaranteed, and on a car with this engine capacity, it is a noteworthy result. Comfortable on journeys and communicative on mixed terrain, the CX-60 uses Kinematic Posture Control, which brakes the inside rear wheel to emphasize cornering dynamics. Furthermore, it travels smoothly through the 8-speed automatic transmission produced by Mazda, which uses a clutch instead of the torque converter, for greater efficiency in gear changes, and for a quicker response when the immediate availability of the 450 is required Nm of maximum torque. With the Driver Assistance Pack, also present on the test vehicle, the driving aids include all the systems compatible with second level autonomous driving. Therefore, the car brakes autonomously if it detects a moving obstacle during the reversing phase; at night the light beam varies automatically depending on external visibility and the presence of other vehicles; and, with adaptive cruise control, it independently maintains the distance to the vehicle in front. There is also emergency braking with pedestrian detection, particularly useful in the city. The cost of the CX-60 e-Skyactiv D, in the Homura RWD version, starts at just over 61,000 euros, while the example we tested, with practically full-optional equipment, exceeds 66,000 euros.A competitive price considering the segment it belongs to and the contents present.
