For the information of drivers: from the beginning of this week, on April 1st, the obligation to drive with lights on on interstate roads, even during the day, ended.
The obligation to turn on lights in the car on the intercity roads applies to all types of vehicles and is valid every year from October 1st until March 31st.
It should be noted that buses, taxis, motorcycles and heavy vehicles must drive with their lights on during the day even on city roads, during the winter months. Motorcycles must travel with lights on on all roads (urban and interurban), all year round.
Even those with automatic high beam lights (DRL), a system that was put into use about a decade ago, must turn on the lights themselves, since DRL only turns on the front lights, but not the rear, which happens when the driver turns on the lights.
The Ministry of Transportation mentions that lights on in a vehicle improve the visibility of the driver, as well as the visibility of the vehicle to other road users. The fine for those who do not light: NIS 100 and two mandatory points.
However, in terms of road safety, there are advantages to turning on lights even in the summer, which helps other drivers to see you sooner, and you to see better every time you pass under a bridge or in a tunnel. Not every car has an automatic lighting system, and these in any case react slowly to changes in lighting conditions, and are not enough to help, for example, when passing under bridges.
