Fuel prices in Germany continue to rise. Gasoline is significantly more expensive than diesel. But why is that so?
The price of gasoline has been rising steadily since mid-March. According to the

's weekly fuel price analysis
, which is based on data from over 14,000 gas stations, the price for a liter of Super E10 has now increased for the third week in a row.
The price difference between diesel and gasoline is growing
According to the automobile club's evaluation from April 2nd, a liter of Super E10 at the gas station cost a nationwide average of 1.833 euros. That's 2.2 cents more than the previous week. The gasoline grade has thus reached a new annual high. For diesel, the increase was significantly lower at 0.2 cents. The liter costs an average of 1,732 euros. According to the ADAC, the price difference between the two fuels is an average of 10.1 cents per liter. This is the highest difference since August 2023.

The ADAC attributes the increase in gasoline prices to the increased price of crude oil. At the time of the evaluation, a barrel of Brent cost around 89 US dollars (approx. 82 euros). That is four US dollars (approx. 3.70 euros) more than a week ago. “The fact that the price of diesel has not increased to the same extent is probably due to the impending end of the heating season and the overall weaker demand,” explains Automobile Club. However, because the energy tax is a good 20 cents lower, the ADAC still sees scope for further reductions on diesel. But developments are going in the right direction: after all, petrol and diesel prices were the same seven weeks ago.
Save at the gas station: ADAC gives tips
Those looking for ways to save money can often find cheaper options abroad. Fuel prices for gasoline and diesel are often lower there than in Germany. But savings can be achieved even without living near the border. Even in neighboring states, fuel prices can be lower. In addition, the nearest gas station is not always the most cost-effective. It is therefore advisable to check fuel prices using an app before refueling.

The automobile club also recommends filling up with Super E10 instead of the more expensive E5 variety if possible. Looking at the time can also lead to significant savings. Fuel prices are highest in the morning. The best times to fill up are between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.
