Anyone who sees a speed camera or a laser pistol usually quickly takes action. But depending on the device, it may already be too late for that.
Anyone who is caught has to dig deep into their pockets. Depending on your speed, you may also face points in Flensburg and a driving ban. The catalog of fines regulates exactly when. But it not only records the punishment that speeders expect, but also the distance at which the measuring devices are triggered.
And in some cases this is much earlier than drivers believe. Sometimes it can be too late when you spot the speed camera. Depending on the device, the speed can be recorded up to 1,000 meters in front of the actual speed camera. Squeezing on the brakes quickly doesn't help.
Measurement technology determines the range
The measurement technology is crucial for determining when the laser gun is triggered. However, the speed cameras often have a relatively large margin, so that it is not clear to the driver when the flash will go off. Accordingly, it is better – and also safer – to stick to the speed limits.

When it comes to range, the catalog of fines differentiates between eight models, as
e-fahrer.de
reports. These can record the speed – depending on the device – between three and 1,000 meters:
Multanova MU VR 6FAFB - up to 15 meters
Multanova MU VR 6F - three to 40 meters
Eso ES 1.0 - up to 18 meters
Eso µP 80 - up to 25 meters
LaserPatrol/TraffiPatrol - 30 to 500 meters
Riegl LR90-235/P - 30 to 500 meters
Riegl FG21-P - 30 to 1,000 meters
Traffipax speedoPhot - up to four lanes, up to 45 meters
Speed cameras only trigger too much at speeds of 4 km/h or more
In addition to the distance, the speed also plays a role in whether the speed camera goes off or not. Theoretically, this could be the case at just one km/h too much, but there is a tolerance range. With a speed limit of 100 km (h), that's three km/h.

The speed camera only goes off when the speed exceeds four km/h. If the limit is above 100 km/h, three percent is considered a tolerance range.
