It's not every day that a road is moved in Israel: tonight it happens, and more so to one of the main roads in the country. A three-kilometer section of Highway 1 will be shifted 40 meters to the north, as part of the construction of the fourth railroad in the Ayalon routes.

The section paved in the last two years by the Nativ Israel Company parallel to the Jerusalem Tel Aviv road, in the section between the Ganot interchange and the postcard interchange, will accommodate the traffic that currently travels west on the adjacent road. The eastbound traffic, which currently travels on the other side of the adjacent railway, will go to the adjacent road.

The new section includes advanced lighting, three travel lanes and will include as a fourth lane the toll road and the public transportation route at the entrance to Tel Aviv. On the other hand, the passengers from Tel Aviv eastward will now have a public transportation route in the section, which was not there until today, and will be able to save bus passengers more than ten minutes during rush hours. The diversion is expected to take place at 4 o'clock in the morning and according to Nati, should not delay passengers for more than a few minutes.

2 tracks will be paved on the section of the road that will be vacated, so that there will be 4 tracks instead, which will lead to the Ayalon track which is now being expanded with the addition of a fourth track. The completion of the project will allow the addition of about 10 trips in each direction every hour, which will allow the addition of additional train trips, frequency improvements and new lines that will be felt throughout the country.

"The diversion of Route 1 is only a step on the way to the construction of the fourth rail," says Erez Price, director of the fourth rail project department at Natibi Israel. "The project continues to progress, with the challenge of working next to an active railroad, and the need to stop work on the Ayalon axis during the rainy season, between April 15 and October 15 every year."

The fourth track is supposed to be ready in 2028, but the work schedule also depends on the ability to work on the track as many hours as possible at night, so as not to affect train traffic during the day, and on the amount of Saturday work permits the project will receive. In their absence the opening will be delayed even more.
