The municipal council of Geraci Siculo, a town in the Madonie, majority rejected the proposal to confer honorary citizenship on Liliana Segre. The proposal, which aimed to acknowledge the Senator's lifetime commitment against racism, was presented by the opposition group "UniAmo Geraci". The majority rejected it for various reasons including the fact that Liliana Segre would have no particular merit towards the community.
Furthermore, the new recognition could have taken on a discriminatory character towards all the other deportees in the Nazi concentration camps. The minority group leader, Gaetano Scancarello, considered the reasons for the refusal with which it would have written "a bad page in the recent political history of Geraci Siculo" laughable.
