Deaths continue to rise in Latin America: Two of the most affected countries in the region, Brazil and Mexico, announced a record number of daily virus-related deaths on Wednesday. Mexico also became the fourteenth country to exceed 100,000 confirmed infections.

The latest vaccine: The Trump administration has selected five companies as the most likely to produce a covid-19 vaccine, a source from the White House coronavirus task force tells CNN. Meanwhile, a vaccine developed by the University of Oxford in association with AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical will be tested in Brazil, the Federal University of Sao Paulo (Unifesp) said in a statement.

George Floyd tests positive: Floyd, the black man whose death after being detained by police sparked protests across the United States, tested positive for coronavirus, according to an autopsy. However, the virus played no known role in his death and was unlikely to be contagious.

A tradition canceled: For the first time in 30 years, Hong Kong authorities will not allow the annual commemoration of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing. Authorities cited the coronavirus threat as their reason for canceling the event, but critics say the explanation sounds hollow as life in the city has begun to return to normal.
