After 186 kilometers with start and finish in Nice, the French crowd favorite prevailed against Marc Hirschi and Adam Yates. The trio had attacked in the last few kilometers and left the peloton behind. With the win, Alaphilippe takes over the yellow jersey.
Shortly after the start, an eight-man breakaway group led by Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) pulled away. For the wearer of the green jersey, it was all about points in the intermediate sprint, in which he finished second behind Matteo Trentin (CCC Team). This was followed by two mountains of the first category in the Alps, where the escape group fell apart, and sagas also let go. Six drivers stayed in the lead with a lead of up to four minutes, but were caught up again about 40 kilometers from the finish.
