She would have been the first German semi-finalist at the French Open since 2014: Petra Kvitova was one size too big for Laura Siegmund. Plagued by back problems, the 32-year-old clearly lost.

Laura Siegemund missed the semi-finals at the French Open.

The 32-year-old had to admit defeat to the Czech Petra Kvitova 3: 6, 3: 6 in the quarter-finals - and missed the first semi-final participation of a German player in Paris since Andrea Petkovic 2014. Either Sofia Kenin or Danielle Collins is waiting for the two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova from the USA.

In the first set Siegemund made too many mistakes on the return and put the balls in the net.

With her sixth ace, Kvitova took the set on the first try.

In the second run Siegemund failed on his own serve: she only scored 47 percent of the points after the first service, and only 23 percent after the first.

With a double fault, she retired after 1:20 hours.

The German had to be treated in the second set for back pain that had plagued her before the round of 16.

There she had thrown the Spaniard Paula Badosa out of the tournament with her variable game, especially the stop balls had been more efficient against Badosa.

While Siegemund had defeated 25 winners in the round of 16, it was only twelve against Kvitova.

There are no longer any German professionals represented in Roland Garros.

In doubles on Thursday Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies will fight for a place in the final.
