The police said that the involved unit was a restaurant, and a birthday party of about 20 people was being held at that time. Unexpectedly, a fire broke out.

It is understood that the "restaurant" involved was run by a Nepalese couple. In the accident, the female proprietor was buried in flames and the male proprietor was injured.

It is reported that the restaurant in question was run by a Nepalese couple. Both were injured and sent to hospital in the accident. Unfortunately, his 40-year-old wife Tamang Binita died of her injuries and was separated from her husband.

A spokesperson for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department responded that according to records, the above-mentioned unit did not hold a valid food business license issued by the department. The department received a complaint in April last year that the premises on the first floor of 562 Canton Road were suspected It operates an unlicensed food business and dispatched personnel to the premises to conduct follow-up investigations, but no unlicensed food business was found.

After that, the department received no related complaints.

The FEHD stated that it will continue to monitor the conditions of the relevant premises and take appropriate actions.

Rana Ray, president of the Hong Kong Nepal Association, said that the private club opened for Nepalese at the scene of the fire was only for members and relatives and friends, not a restaurant.

According to his understanding, due to the difficulty of finding a meeting place in Hong Kong and financial difficulties, Nepalese people will rent similar tenement units in Hong Kong and set up private clubs with restricted members for members, people in the same district and friends to hold parties. The location will not be open to the public.

He also pointed out that many low-rise tenement houses in Hong Kong are for commercial operations, including restaurants, and he hopes that the government can ensure fire safety.
