The Attorney General of Mexico, Alejandro Gertz Manero and the Secretary of Justice of the United States William Barr issued a joint statement in relation to the case of the former Secretary of National Defense of Mexico, General Salvador Cienfuegos, detained in Los Angeles, California, by charges of conspiracy to manufacture, import and distribute narcotics to the United States and money laundering. According to the statement, “in recognition of the strong institutional partnership between Mexico and the United States and with the interest of demonstrating our united front against all forms of criminality, the United States Department of Justice has made the decision to request the judge to dismiss the charges against former Secretary Cienfuegos so that he can be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted in accordance with Mexican law. According to the document, this stems from a request from the Mexican prosecutor's office and within the framework of the evidence exchange agreements, the United States authorities added that they have provided evidence to their Mexican counterpart in this case.
