In a surprise and controversial move, the US Department of Justice dropped the charges against former Mexican Defense Secretary Salvador Cienfuegos.
The retired general was charged with conspiracy to manufacture, import and distribute narcotics to the United States and money laundering, charges of which he has pleaded not guilty.
The accusation that the former official had against him describes in detail the way in which Cienfuegos would have collaborated with organized crime, something that he denies.
