Cuba denounced the sanctions imposed by the US administration on Cuban Defense Minister Alvaro Lopez Meira and a unit of the Ministry of the Interior, describing them as a "new slander" towards it.

"We reject these baseless sanctions imposed by the United States government against Meira and the Special National Brigade of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior," Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said in a tweet.

Rodriguez added: "The United States must apply the Magnitsky Act that it created due to the daily acts of repression that it is witnessing and the police violence that killed 1,201 people in 2020 on its soil."

The 2012 Magnitsky Act allows the US administration to impose sanctions on foreign nationals suspected of serious human rights abuses or impose economic sanctions on foreign countries and entities designated by the United States according to its double standards.

Yesterday, the United States imposed sanctions on the Cuban defense minister and a unit of the Cuban interior, in continuation of its hostile policies against Cuba, while US President Joe Biden considered in a statement that these sanctions "are only the beginning."

Cuba has been subjected to an unjust economic embargo imposed by the United States for nearly 60 years because of its policies that reject attempts to exclusivity and American hegemony.
