United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the Taliban to "immediately stop their offensive in Afghanistan", warning that "the situation in Afghanistan is getting out of control."
"The message from the international community to those involved in the war must be clear that seizing power by military force is a losing approach," Guterres told reporters today, adding that "this will only lead to a prolonged civil war or the complete isolation of Afghanistan."
The Taliban movement has recently taken control of large areas of Afghanistan, including important cities and border crossings, in conjunction with the US administration's announcement of the withdrawal of its soldiers from this country after an occupation that lasted for nearly two decades and completely drained Afghanistan and plunged it into a cycle of chaos and violence.
