South Korea has set a new record for the number of coronavirus infections exceeding 35,000 amid the rapid spread of the Omicron strain.

And Yonhap news agency quoted the South Korean Agency for Disease Control and Prevention as saying in a statement, "35,286 injuries were recorded during the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of injuries to one million and 44,963 injuries, while the total number of deaths reached 6,886 cases after 13 new deaths were recorded."

The government decided last week to extend existing social distancing rules for an additional two weeks as the country struggles to contain the mutated Omicron strain.
