An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted southeast Taiwan today, but no casualties or damage were reported.

"The quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, and was at a depth of 30.6 km," Reuters quoted the Met Office as saying.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates in the South China Sea and is an earthquake prone area.

More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and more than 2,000 people were killed in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999.
