Initially, the magnitude was recorded at 6.9.
The epicenter was located 70 kilometers south of the city of Hualien, Taiwan, according to the USGS.
A CNN crew in Taipei felt the shaking of the quake.
The initial report from the USGS reported that the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers.
