This assault comes hours after the appointment of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as interim president.

The latter said: "The protesters want to prevent me from fulfilling my responsibilities as interim president".

Security forces failed to contain the crowd but used water cannons and tear gas to repel them.

These scenes recall the capture of the presidential palace by the demonstrators on July 9.

The demonstrators accuse the leaders of being responsible for the unprecedented economic crisis that the country is currently experiencing.

They demand the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The president has promised to step down on July 13, and the interim president has pledged to step down after a government of national unity is formed.
