  • Queen Elizabeth II died "peacefully" on Thursday at the age of 96 at her Scottish residence in Balmoral. 

  • His son Charles, 73, becomes King Charles III, while the latter's wife, Camilla, becomes queen consort.  

  • Returning to London after spending the night at Balmoral, Charles III gave his first speech as king on Friday, promising to "serve the British all his life".

  • He will be officially proclaimed king this morning. The death of the sovereign opens a period of national mourning, until his funeral in ten days.

  • Thousands of Britons, some moved to tears, came to lay flowers in front of Buckingham Palace, Windsor and Balmoral in the north of Scotland.

Charles III officially proclaimed king at 11 a.m. 

Queen Elizabeth's son will be officially proclaimed king at the accession council to be held at 10am local time at the State Apartments in St James's Palace.

A second proclamation will be read in the City of London, at the Royal Exchange, at noon (1 p.m. in France).
