The country is governed by Islamic law, women live under guardianship and being homosexual is a crime

Qatar is the first Arab country to host a World Cup.

It is a country that has been much courted in recent years because it has plenty of oil and gas, but where Islamic law governs, women live under guardianship and being homosexual is a crime punishable by jail.

The country has been preparing for this competition for more than 10 years, which it sees as a great opportunity to project another image to the world.
