The country is governed by Islamic law, women live under guardianship and being homosexual is a crime

Qatar is the first Arab country to host a World Cup.

It is a country that has been much courted in recent years because it has plenty of oil and gas, but where Islamic law governs, women live under guardianship and being homosexual is a crime punishable by jail.

The country has been preparing for this competition for more than 10 years, which it sees as a great opportunity to project another image to the world.

Natalia Junquera, special envoy of EL PAÍS in Doha, tells how.

Two workers finalize the preparations for one of the facilities that will host the World Cup in Qatar.
