After 8 days of fighting, SWAT units, the special police counterterrorism unit, eliminated at least 200 terrorists, according to a senior officer. Among the unit's heroic rescue operations, they also rescued 12 female soldiers at the Nahal Oz base who were hiding in the war room, moments before the terrorists intended to burn them inside.

The SWAT, like all branches of the defense establishment, did not expect such a number of terrorists to infiltrate Israel. During the battles, the unit lost nine fighters who were killed. Thirty-five of them were injured after defending civilians and police officers with their bodies.
