Tragic coincidence or assassination? A personal aide to General Valery Zaluzhny, commander of the Ukrainian armed forces, was killed Monday night when a grenade he received as a gift exploded.

According to the initial findings of the investigation, Major Hanadi Chestiakov received a birthday package from his friend, Colonel Timchenko: a bottle of Black Label and six grenades. "It's hard to surprise you - so gives you real pomegranates and a bottle of high-quality whiskey," Colonel Timchenko told Chestiakov in the presence of three witnesses.

What happened next, when Chestiakov arrived home, is still not entirely clear. The officer seemed to assume that Timchenko coveted Tsun and that the grenades were nothing but special cups - and pulled the wicket. According to a version published by the interior minister, the officer's son took one of the grenades, and when Chestiakov took it out of his hands, the explosion occurred. Either way, Zaluzhny's personal assistant was killed instantly.

Timchenko is now being investigated. In his house were found two pomegranates that he had kept for himself as souvenirs. A source in the investigative team told the UNIAN news agency that 99.99% was a tragic coincidence. The son (13), who was ostensibly interested in the grenade, was hospitalized in serious condition.

Chestiakov was survived by his wife and four children.
