According to the description, the president and first lady made their way to their vehicle with the intention of leaving the headquarters in downtown Wilmington just after 20 p.m. local time. The first lady wished "Happy holiday" to journalists waiting nearby, but just as the president was leaving the building, the car hit one of the SUVs in the convoy.
