The French newspaper Le Figaro on Wednesday published an extensive investigation into the October 7 attacks. According to the investigation, the attack was planned for about two years, as early as 2021, when Yahya Sinwar and Izz ad-Din al-Qassem Mohammed Deif, commander of the Izz al-Din Brigades, acted vigorously to sabotage Israeli intelligence.

Among other things, they appointed new commanders to the military wing's battalions, those that Israeli intelligence was not familiar with, and sent Hamas operatives to prepare for the attack during military training in Lebanon.
In addition, there is the testimony of a Palestinian who identifies himself as Marwan, who claims to have spoken with Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar and heard from him two years ago that he was planning to launch a terrorist attack that was supposed to reach Ashkelon.

"In 2021, Yahya Sinwar told me that the next war with the Israelis would include 5,000 operatives in the military wing who would surround Majdal [Ashkelon]," the Palestinian says of his conversation with the head of the de-facto Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip. "I replied: 'You want the Israelis to liquidate Gaza and turn its territory into a parking lot so that the corrupt Palestinian Authority will return!'"

Two years after that conversation, last October, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, leading to an iron sword war and the entry of IDF forces into a ground operation inside the Gaza Strip. Last Friday, at the end of a daily assessment with senior defense officials, Defense Minister Yoav Galant said: "Yahya Sinwar now hears the IDF's tractors above him, the air force bombs and the IDF's operation. He will also meet the barrels of our rifles soon."
