The sad truth must be told: three months less than a week from Black Saturday, contrary to all promises, the political demesne is here again, with all our might.

So what if we were promised it would be different. So what if a unity government is formed here, in order to deal with the important and set aside the less important? So what if we were promised that the budget would be businesslike, not sectoral, and certainly not political? So what if we were promised that there would be no impeachments or appointments. So what if we were promised that all quarrels and friction would be set aside for the sake of the main thing.

So they promised and didn't keep. Big deal. Politicians are lying again. It's not. The Israeli public is not there. Since October 7, he has been in a completely different place. He is strongly attached, bonded inside the tank or armored personnel carrier, busy with volunteering, donations, aid and rescue. He does what it takes to win, and has no interest in knowing or touching what stinks of politics or political considerations.

The March of the Families of the Abductees in Jerusalem // Yoni Rikner

This public deserves better. Much more. The 130,190 evacuees, who have not been home for weeks, deserve more. The 1,500 reservists deserve more, and the women and their children left behind, alone, deserve to bear the tough financial and psychological burden. Tens of thousands of regular soldiers who fight deserve better, as well as their parents who don't sleep at night. The residents of Bari, Kfar Gaza, Nahal Oz and Nir Oz – four kibbutzim that paid the heaviest price on Black Saturday – deserve better. The <>,<> dead and their families deserve more. And the abductees and their families deserve more, much more.

The good people don't have an address

All these good people have no address. Check how many ministers met with the families of abductees or visited evacuees. Check out how many Knesset members are busy with what really matters right now to the State of Israel, which is in one of its most difficult hours – politically, security, economically and socially. Look at how many items in the budget really serve the national effort, and how much the political effort. Look at how many hours a day the leadership spends on the war and its consequences, and how much on politics and its consequences. And check out the tweets. Actually, it's better not to.

Israel deserves more than that. It deserves a leadership that gets up in the morning and that the only thing it cares about is winning the war. and have a budget to support that effort. And to ensure international legitimacy that will buy time and pave the way there. And to take care of everyone who needs it according to clear priorities, headed by those who have paid and are paying the highest price – abducted, killed, evacuated, unemployed, businesses in need of assistance. And to ensure that all government ministers and ministries and government officials serve this effort alone. And to keep the public united, because that's the main key to victory.

Unfortunately, the government is doing the opposite. Instead of bringing victory closer, as she promised, she endangers him with her actions and words. This is a real tragedy, because Black Saturday gave Israel the opportunity for a one-time restart. It can still happen, but it requires a sharp and quick reaction. If it doesn't, we'll soon discover that instead of a wake-up call, we've all woken up again to 6 October.
