Khalil al-Hayaf, a senior figure in the Hamas terrorist organization, was killed Tuesday evening in an attack in the Dahiyah quarter of Beirut, the Lebanese capital.

A senior member of the terrorist organization left the Gaza Strip before the October 7 attacks. Since then he has been in Egypt, Lebanon and Qatar. He was born in Gaza in 1960 and joined Hamas during the first intifada. He was arrested in the early 90s and imprisoned for three years.

Al-Haya later completed his doctorate in Islamic studies through a university in Sudan, one of the countries on the arms smuggling axis to Hamas. He later became a member of the Palestinian parliament after running on Hamas' list. A few years later, the parliament was dissolved by order of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas due to Hamas' majority.

In the Gaza Strip itself, al-Haya escaped several assassination attempts. At the same time, he participated in many Hamas delegations abroad and became a member of the political bureau in the Gaza Strip. In 2021, he was appointed Sinwar's deputy. Since the beginning of the war against Hamas in Gaza, Al-Haya has frequently spoken out on the issue of abductees and lives on the line between Lebanon and Qatar.
