The mediator who negotiated the maritime border agreement about a year ago said it was essential to bring calm to southern Lebanon, even if an agreement could not be reached at this stage. Among other things, he met with interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and commander of the Lebanese army.

"At this stage, swift action is required. A solution must be reached that will allow the Lebanese people to return to their normal lives in southern Lebanon, and the residents of northern Israel must be allowed to return to their homes and lives in security. That's the goal. I heard what the Israeli government had to say – that there is a narrow window of opportunity and they prefer a diplomatic solution. I believe that this is the reality and that both sides prefer a diplomatic solution."

According to a report in the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar, during his visit to Beirut, Hochstein will stick to his previous plan to end disputes on the land border between Israel and Lebanon, which will include negotiations on the 13 points along the border. According to the report, the contacts will also deal with a possible Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese part of the village of Rajar.
