Hearing on 737 Max crashes: "If Boeing knew ..."

2019-10-29T13:01:43.589Z

Boeing boss Dennis Muilenburg has today the US Trade Committee answer questions and answers: It is about the errors that led to the crash of two 737 Max models - and the charge of cover-up.

The aircraft manufacturer Boeing has made according to the boss Dennis Muilenburg crucial improvements to the model 737 Max: "We have learned and still learn from these accidents, Mr. Chairman We know that we have made mistakes and some things wrong," it says in the written version of the statement, which Muilenburg will present at the hearing before the US Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday. The hearing begins at 3 pm German time.

The Group has made changes to the Model 737 Max, Muilenburg said, "to ensure that accidents like these never happen again."

Exactly one year ago in Indonesia a 737 Max of the airline Lion Air crashed, 189 people were killed. In March, the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines machine of the same type claimed 157 lives. Since then, the aircraft model has remained on the ground worldwide.

Attention to the victims

Roger Wicker, chairman of the US Senate Commerce Committee, said last week that the 737 Max "will fly only if 99.9 percent of the American public and American politicians are convinced they are absolutely safe." The two machines were crashed according to previous findings, especially because of the faulty control software MCAS.

Wicker apparently also wants to turn to the families of the victims at the meeting: "I promise their beloved loved ones that we'll find out what went wrong on these flights, and that we work to prevent such tragedies in the future."

It is expected that many representatives of the families of victims will be present. They plan to shoot up photos of the victims. This should draw attention to the victims "rather than political, bureaucratic or technical issues," said Michael Stumo, who lost his daughter Samya Rose Stumo in the crash of the Ethiopian Air machine.

Stumo puts a question to the fore, which is likely to occupy the committee as well: "If Boeing knew that the crash of the Lion Air plane had something to do with the MCAS, why not correct it immediately and withhold information instead? and put the blame on the pilots? " Then from his point of view at least the second crash could have been prevented.

The global launch ban for the aircraft beats in the Airbus competitors even more on the balance sheet. In the third quarter, operating profit plummeted by about half.
