ACSAD expands its activities in Sudan

The Scientific Symposium organized by the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Arid Lands (ACSAD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the Republic of Sudan discussed the first phase of the project (the optimal use map for 100 million hectares of Sudan's land), which is implemented by ACSAD in cooperation with the concerned Sudanese authorities. ACSAD experts presented the scientific and practical results of the study including vegetation cover, soil classification, livestock and water resources and pasture status in three states (Khartoum, Northern and Nile River).

The Sudanese Minister of Agriculture, Eng. Issa Osman Sharif, praised this great scientific achievement and the projects implemented by ACSAD in the fields of raising wheat, barley, sorghum, preservative agriculture, developing livestock, especially sheep, goats and camels, as well as in the fields of palm cultivation and water resources studies.

For his part, the Director General of ACSAD, Dr. Rafik Ali Saleh, stressed the organization's readiness to do everything that would contribute to sustainable development in the Republic of Sudan.

The study concluded a set of scientific proposals on the agricultural future in these states, which is about 50 million hectares and identify the types of field crops and fruit trees appropriate in addition to plans to invest surface water and groundwater and proposals for the establishment of water dams in the study areas and the potential for expansion of wheat cultivation, especially in the northern states of Sudan .

The study included the preparation of more than 600 maps of the regions of these states, and developed a vision for the future of investment in them.

The two sides agreed to start the second phase of the study, which includes the study of three other states are the island and the White Nile and Blue Nile.

The workshop was attended by a large number of Sudanese experts from the ministries of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, officials and experts from the three states, a group of Sudanese university professors and representatives of several Arab and international organizations.
