Not every day, regulation is applied in Israel to two of the most powerful companies, certainly two of the names known in the food industry: Shufersal, the largest retail chain in Israel, and Strauss, one of the largest food producers in Israel.

Investigators from the Companies Authority raided the offices of the two companies, took documents and even questioned some of the executives at the two companies.

According to sources in the PA, this is not an exclusive investigation against these two bodies and it is very possible that more factors will be investigated in the coming days.

Shufersal confirmed the raid and that the CEO, Itzik Aberkhan, was questioned at the Competition Authority's offices, but added that "the company is acting in accordance with the law and will cooperate fully with the law enforcement authorities.

" Investigating and investigating suspected violations of competition law by a number of suppliers and networks following recent incidents.

"Since the investigation is in its infancy, it is not possible to provide further details at this stage."

Not "because" of the ultra-Orthodox

Economy Minister Orna Barbibai

said yesterday on Channel 12 that she instructed the competition authority to check the company's conduct following the affair of its website for the ultra-Orthodox sector, which sold products at a cheaper price than the regular website. However it will be clarified that the investigation is not related to the exposure of the channel.

Barbibai, who is also the minister in charge of the competition authority added: "I spoke to the network's CEO and told him that I think the fact that there is such a significant gap between products in the way the citizen asks himself why one citizen can buy at such a price and the other does not require explanation. Shufersal says it still has physical stores that are sold at a different price.

To me the story of the online sale has a meaning that needs to be expressed accordingly. Because if there are no real estate prices here, etc., it means that every citizen should be exposed to this option wherever he is. He understands that Itzik and he will act accordingly.

His claim is that he will not be able to sell at these prices widely so I asked the competition authority, to do a test not only for Shufersal but for all the chains and check the gaps between themselves, between the physical stores and the online purchase.

There is no doubt that an order needs to be made. "

Received a blow from the State Comptroller

At the same time, it will be clarified that the relationship between Barbibai and the Competition Authority may have a connection to the investigation, even if indirectly: , Ostensibly, that contribute to an increase in the cost of living.

As a result, the possibility of uniting the bodies or even closing them - and in any case making far-reaching changes within them - was examined.

Authority for this was transferred from the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, which became the Ministry of Spirituality and Social Security, headed by Minister Meir Cohen, to the Ministry of Economy and Industry, headed by Minister Orna Barbibai.

It is not inconceivable that the aforementioned bodies, which have suffered further criticism against the background of the rise in the cost of living and the intention to raise prices in the coming months, have decided to take action and show their importance in maintaining fair competition in the food industry.
