The price of the pound sterling against the dollar fell by 0.9 percent in today's trading, recording its lowest level since 1985.
The pound fell to $1.1418, down 0.9 percent.
The euro hit $0.9917, its lowest since late 2002.
The dollar rose to 144.99 yen, or 1.5 percent, a level not reached since August 1998.
The European Central Bank is expected to raise interest rates tomorrow, but these expectations are not enough to support the currency in light of the faltering economy.
