“Instead of fulfilling this obligation transparently, United defrauded US Post by providing forged package delivery information for several years and accepting millions of dollars in payments the company was not entitled to. "
, Said in a statement the deputy attorney general of the Department of Justice, Nicholas McQuaid.
Like other airlines, United Airlines delivers letters and packages destined for foreign countries, including to US troops deployed outside the country, on behalf of US Post.
Forged receipts
Under the terms of the contract, United is only paid in full if the mail is delivered
"on time"
and the company proves this by receipts, via barcode scans, at the time of receipt by their recipients.
However, between 2012 and 2015, United returned falsified receipts to La Poste, based not on the actual time of delivery but on an estimate.
According to US authorities, some company officials have also sought to cover up these practices.
United Airlines, which paid $ 49 million to settle the lawsuits, has also pledged to strengthen controls to ensure compliance with the regulations and to provide an annual report on the subject.
