The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week.
And Reuters quoted the US Department of Labor as saying that applications for government unemployment benefits filed for the first time increased by 21,000 to 218,000, at a revised pace in light of seasonal factors for the week ending May 14, the highest level since January.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 200,000 orders for the week.
