Billy Wilder once told me that the two people who had best understood, and portrayed, Los Angeles, were two Englishmen: Raymond Chandler and David Hockney. And it is true that the novels of the first and the paintings of the second make you feel and love that city, so reviled. Wilder himself made two black paintings of Los Angeles in two of his masterpieces: Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard .

To the list should be added Charlie Haden and his Quartet West. This quartet recorded six albums between 1986 and 2010. Haden's melodic double bass, Ernie Watts' sax, Alan Broadbent's piano and Larance Marable's drums manage to recreate a cinematic, noir atmosphere, between The Eternal Dream and Chinatown . And one sees the names of the streets go by like in a movie, as if we were in Philip Marlowe's car: La Ciénega, Los Feliz, Pico Blvd ...
