Buying vegetables and fruits seasonally saves money, tastes better and is good for the environment.
You can find out what is the season in May here.
Heinrich Heine already wrote: “Today is May 1st.
[...] It's a beautiful day! ”We are looking forward to it this spring, because from May there will be more
fruit and vegetables in season
than in March or April.
The good weather also benefits herbs * that grow outdoors.
Why should you shop seasonally and regionally at all?
Fruit and vegetables that cannot be grown in Germany at certain times of the year (or in the case of exotic fruits: never) have to be imported from far away, which is bad for the environment and the climate.
The transport causes a lot of CO2 and greenhouse gases.
But apart from that, you are doing yourself something good by
buying
local vegetables and fruits of the season
, because firstly they are cheaper and secondly they taste better because they were harvested aromatic and ripe.

Apples
Strawberries
Cherries
In May, the
strawberry season
finally wakes up
from hibernation! You now get regional strawberries from protected cultivation, which means that they have ripened under foil or fleece or in the greenhouse. Interesting to know: In
May,
regional apples
are only available from storage, in the summer months of June and July they are neither grown in the open nor stored in storage. So now strike again and, for example, cook delicious applesauce from it. Otherwise,
things are unfortunately still a bit cautious
when it comes to
regional fruit varieties
in May
. The first regional
cherries
can be expected
at least from the end of May
. We'll have to wait a little longer for other berries and plums.
