Detainee beating, house arrest for 6 prison officers

Six agents of the penitentiary police on duty in Reggio Calabria were reached by a precautionary custody order under house arrest issued by the investigating judge at the request of the prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri and the prosecutor Sara Perazzan. (HANDLE)


(ANSA) - REGGIO CALABRIA, NOVEMBER 28 - Six prison police officers on duty in Reggio Calabria were reached by a precautionary custody order under house arrest issued by the magistrate at the request of the prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri and the prosecutor Sara Perazzan.


   Torture and aggravated personal injury to the detriment of an inmate of the "Panzera" penitentiary institute are the charges contested by the six officers who ended up under house arrest.

Among these is also the commander of the penitentiary police in service at the prison of Reggio Calabria.

For two other suspects, the investigating judge ordered the disqualification measure of suspension from the exercise of a public office.


   "They illegally led the prisoner to an isolation cell, without any prior decision by the Disciplinary Board or without any prior decision taken as a precautionary measure by the Director, maintaining gratuitous conduct of violence and physical oppression which caused the prisoner acute physical suffering through multiple conducts and subjecting him to inhumane treatment and degrading to the dignity of the person".

   The facts contested by the suspects date back to 22 January 2022, the same day as the visit to Reggio Calabria by the former justice minister Marta Cartabia.

The prisoner had made a protest, refusing to return to his cell after having taken advantage of the expected walk outside.

The reaction, according to the investigations, was very violent.

In fact, the young prisoner was hit repeatedly with the batons supplied by the department, but also with fists.

Furthermore, the officers involved made him undress, leaving him semi-naked for over two hours in the cell where he had been taken.
