The death toll from the earthquake that struck areas in the western Azerbaijan province of northwest Iran rose to 95.
The Iranian Fars Agency quoted the director of crisis management in the province, Amir Abbas Jaafari, as saying in a statement today that the tremor had damaged about 3,500 housing units at rates ranging between 50 and 100 percent in the villages affiliated with the cities of Khoy and Salmas in the governorate, explaining that tents were distributed to the affected people and providing food and emergency assistance to them .
The tremor, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck yesterday the cities of Khoy and Salmas in the western Azerbaijan province and its center, the city of Qutour, the border with Turkey, while nine people were killed and 37 others were wounded in Turkey, followed by 24 aftershocks in areas near the Turkish-Iranian border.
