The Chinese Ministry of Defense strongly criticized the attack by US Defense Secretary Mark Esper through a newspaper article on the Chinese Liberation Army, stressing that the accusations he made were "baseless."
Esper published an article at the end of last month entitled "The Pentagon is ready for China," in which he said that the People's Liberation Army is not an army that serves the nation, but it belongs to and serves the Chinese Communist Party.
"This article is full of Cold War mentality and ideological bias, and unfoundedly distorts the image of the People's Liberation Army and fabricates the so-called Chinese military threat," Chinese Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said at a press conference today.
He added that the facts prove that any attempt to sever the close relations between the Chinese army and the people is doomed to failure, noting at the same time that: “Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China has never started a war or occupied even one inch of the territory of another country.” The Chinese armed forces "contribute to the growth of global peace forces."
The spokesman described the United States' attempts to escalate regional tensions and sow discord between China and other countries in the region as "false hope."
