The list of candidates for the position of Attorney General for the Knesset was closed last night (Tuesday) and the battle over the identity of the next adviser begins.
The selection committee that will convene in the coming days has not yet published the full list, and in the coming days it is expected to examine whether all those who submitted their candidacies meet the threshold conditions.

, a private lawyer also serves as legal counsel of company news on Channel 12;

, legal advisor of the Haifa municipality. There may be additional candidates for the position.

Sources in the Knesset estimated that the real battle for the position would be between Acting Attorney General Sagit Afik and Deputy Attorney General Nazri, but did not rule out the possibility that another candidate might eventually win the appointment.
The person who will decide the identity of the next attorney general for the next five years is Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin from the Likud.

However, Levin's power is limited, and he will have to choose from 2-4 candidates to be submitted to him by a locating committee whose composition is set by law.
Each candidate must have the support of at least four committee members to enter the final list.
Levin is known for his desire to increase governance and strengthen the power of the political echelon along with reducing the power of the judiciary, so the chances are that he will choose a candidate who will not be opposed to the politicians.

The search committee, which Levin tried to change to increase the power of Knesset members, is headed by retired Judge Asher Grunis, a former Supreme Court president.
Its members are the Civil Service Commissioner Prof. Daniel Hershkovitz, the Bar Association's representative Adv. Maimon Toledano who ran in the Likud primaries, the Faculty of Laws representative Prof. Muhammad Watad, the Dean of the Safed Academic College Law School, and the Chairman of the Constitution Committee, MK Yaakov Asher (Torah Judaism), Chairman of the State Audit Committee, Ofer Shelach (Yesh Atid), and Chairman of the Knesset Committee, MK Eitan Gisenburg (Blue and White).
