Billionaire and French MP Olivier Dassault was killed yesterday in a helicopter crash in northwestern France.

According to police, the accident occurred in Normandy province, where he has a cottage.

He was the son of Serge Dassault, whose group the Raphael and Mirage fighter jets created and controlled the La Figaro newspaper.

Police said the helicopter crashed near Deville, after taking off from a private area.

Next to Dassault, the pilot was killed.

There were no other people on the helicopter, and it is still unclear what caused the accident.

Dassault, 69, has a fortune of about 6.3 billion euros, and was rated by Forbes magazine as the 361st richest man in the world.

He has been a Conservative MP since 2002, relinquishing his seat on the Dassault Group board to avoid a conflict of interest.

State officials praised him.

"This is a great loss," French President Emmanuel Macron said of Dassault's death.

"Olivia Dassault loved France. An industry leader, legislator, elected local public, reserve commander in the Air Force: for the rest of his life he never ceased to serve the country and value its assets. His sudden death is a great loss."
