Last year, eleven more accidents occurred in the district than in 2020, so the numbers remained almost constant.

Three people were killed, a cyclist died weeks after a collision.

The number of injuries has fallen again – but one cause of the accident has increased enormously.

District

– The number of accidents in the district of Starnberg remained constant over the past year.

The police registered 3767 accidents, only eleven more than in the previous year (+0.29 percent).

In the area of the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria North, to which Starnberg belongs, the number rose by 1.4 percent, with large differences between the districts.

According to statistics, three people died in the circle (-2), in fact there were four.

Of the 3,767 accidents on municipal and country roads and the two motorways, 1,649 were so-called qualified accidents, i.e. those involving personal injury or a criminal offence.

This value increased by 2.5 percent.

The other 2129 accidents were small collisions such as parking bumps, but also wildlife accidents.

After a low in 2020 (due to lockdown and reduced mobility), their number rose by 11.5 percent to 581.

The decline in the more serious accidents is clear: there were personal injuries in 508 cases (-6.46 percent), the number of injuries fell by three percent to 615. This number is "significantly below the values of the past ten years", says Oliver Jauch, Police traffic officer for the district.

However, the number of seriously injured people in terms of statistics (24 hours in hospital) has increased by almost ten percent to 120.

Two cyclists, a motorcyclist and a car were killed

The specifications of the statistics also affect the number of fatal accidents.

If an injured person dies after an accident within 30 days, he is counted as an accident fatality.

That's why there are officially three fatalities, but actually four.

A cyclist (66) was on the bike path in Wangen at the beginning of September and was overlooked by a crossing motorist.

She suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital in October.

"The fact that she had just taken off her helmet in the forest and later wanted to put it on again in city traffic is particularly tragic," explains Jauch.

"Even if this traffic accident is not statistically classified as a fatal traffic accident due to the long period of time before death, the consequences are no less dramatic and just as drastic for those involved."

Just two days earlier (September 2nd), an 82-year-old man in Gilching had fallen on the road with his bike, possibly for medical reasons, and been hit by a car.

On August 9, a motorist (23) crashed into a tree on the way home from work between Perchting and Drößling;

there was no salvation for him.

On July 3, a motorist overtaking a convoy overlooked an oncoming motorcyclist on the B 2 near Monathausen;

the motorcyclist (60) succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident.

There were a number of other serious accidents, such as that of a three-wheeler Fiat in Feldafing in May, which was hopefully overcrowded with seven young people and slammed into a VW, or a truck that got stuck with its loading hook in an underpass in Tutzing.

Significant increase in speed accidents

Among the causes, there was a significant decrease in alcohol (35 overall, -25.5 percent) and drugs (one case, -80 percent).

"The number of traffic accidents caused by inappropriate speed has increased enormously," Jauch continued.

With 196 accidents (+66 percent), this number is at the level of ten years ago.

The increase outside of built-up areas is particularly strong: with 152 speed accidents there, it was almost twice as many as in the previous year (83).

In urban areas, the increase was 25.7 percent to 44. Jauch: "With the higher number of speed accidents, the number of people injured in these accidents has also increased, albeit not to the same extent.

In 2021, 95 people were injured due to inappropriate speed, 18.75 percent more than in the previous year.

The number of accidents for motorcyclists (51, -17.7 percent) and cyclists (254, -11.8 percent) declined last year.

The number of injured cyclists fell by 13.2 percent to 243. The declines are also a result of the 2020 lockdown, when many more people were cycling and therefore also involved in accidents.

Three quarters of the cyclists were responsible for the accidents in 2021 themselves, 122 fell without the involvement of others.

The further decline in the number of injuries is pleasing, summarizes Oliver Jauch, it is a ten-year low.

The increased number of seriously injured people, who are often the result of excessive or improper speed, is a cause for concern.

Jauch therefore makes an unmistakable announcement to drivers: "The police departments in the district will therefore continue to focus on monitoring speed."
